Bears are a way of life here in Kodiak, and we generally admire and respect them,
but when they charge at your grandson, that's something else again! On this day,
Kavin had to shoot a bear that charged him and his uncle. I really can't believe he
was able to maintain his composure enough to do it.
[I'm sure there are those of you who feel that it is wrong to kill an animal, and I respect that.
I felt the same way before I moved to Alaska. Hunting and fishing are a way of life here,
and everything is very well controlled, with lots of rules, seasons, and limits.
As for bears, there are controlled "trophy hunts," which many of us are opposed to,
and usually involve people from far away with lots of money to spend. Other than that,
you can only kill a bear "in defense of life or property" and then you must report it
and turn it over to the state. This is so people don't trophy hunt and then say it was self-defense.]
